The A - Z of An Eclectic Music Collection: H......

..... is for Harry Connick Jr & Hillsong
I have a little bit of Harry Connick Jr. in my library. Not a lot, I'm not a huge, huge fan, and I'm not sure where or when I first heard him. But when I'm in the mood for a bit of funk and that big band sound, I might add a song or two from Harry to a playlist that will get me tapping my toes or even dancing around the house. Songs such as "(I Could Only) Whisper Your Name" or "Here Comes the Big Parade". He features a couple of times on my "housework" playlist!

Moving on, at last count I had 138 Hillsong songs in my library, and then there's Hillsong United, and Hillsong Worship, which adds another 39 or so. So, lots to choose from for this one.

Over the years I've moved towards and then away from Hillsong music at various times - mainly because I've played them over and over and needed something new for a while. But I've also become a little more discerning about lyrics and whether or not they're theologically sound, or far too "all about me and not enough about God". But there are still many songs from this mega-church that I really enjoy, so how will I narrow it down to just one?? Well, how about I don't. Since Harry brought a bit of funk into this post, I thought I'd choose one of their older songs that has a nice funky feel to it - "I Know It" from 1997. And then, as we've just celebrated Easter, I think this one - "O Praise the Name" - would be a timely choice too.

  1. I never listened to Hillsong and didn't realise they had recordings. There you go, I've learned something today. Thanks!

    1. Haha Sue, they're BIG (in the worship music scene anyway) and have recorded many, many albums over the years!!

  2. I love Hillsong Sue - "What A Beautiful Name" is my favourite atm. Sometimes I find it all a bit of an over the top production, but they've done a lot to legitimize Christian music to the mainstream audience without compromising on their message.

    1. I agree with your sentiments Leanne, and that song is a really lovely one too. We attended Hillsong Paris a couple of times in 2013, and enjoyed the unique experience of their bilingual services. Memorable!

    1. Hillsong wasn't around when my kids were little Janet, but if they had been I'm sure I would have done the same!
