The A - Z of An Eclectic Music Collection: V......

..... is for Van Morrison, Vivaldi & Vdelli
Van Morrison is definitely an acquired taste, one I didn't acquire until my late 40s in fact, when a new friend introduced me to his music. He's actually a pretty talented musician, and over the past 10 years or so my collection has expanded to include a few of his albums. I don't know why it took me so long to get to know songs like "Gloria", "Moondance", "Bright Side of the Road", "Brown Eyed Girl", and "When the Leaves Come Falling Down".

My pick for this post though - "Have I Told You Lately" - is such a beautiful song, often played at weddings, but originally written as a prayer.

Another composer of the classics, Antonio Vivaldi, has a long list of pieces in my music library, well-known offerings like "The Four Seasons", as well as a variety of flute, lute, piccolo, trumpet and string concertos. However, as lovely as they all are, it was still easy to pick just one from that list.

This piece, "Lute concerto in D, 2nd movement - Largo" takes me right back to my Sesame Street watching days (yes, really), whether from my own childhood or when I watched with my boys, I'm not sure. But this piece was the background music to a little video clip they would sometimes show, with droplets of water dripping down leaves, like tears. It was just so beautiful, it used to make me cry. I used to think I'd love to have it at my funeral, I imagined everyone weeping as they listened. Now I think I'll probably just have a cardboard coffin, give me a quick cremation, and then throw my ashes in the compost. You know, why waste resources and all that. I'll be somewhere much better by then anyway!! (perhaps they could play it as they open the compost bin...........)

It took me ages to locate the name of the piece, and when I finally did (probably by accident in the end), it then took me a while to find a version that sounded close to the one I'd originally loved. This one I've posted is by John Williams and it's as close as I've ever been able to find. I hope you enjoy it as much as I always do.

My last offering for V is a local Perth band by the name of Vdelli. Now this band was part of my "single again" years, when I went through a bit of a midlife pub stage, going out and enjoying live music with friends, and feeling a little like a teenager again. It was fun while it lasted and I'm sure it helped me along in my healing journey (but probably didn't help my hearing any). Vdelli is still performing, although they have always had more of a following in Europe than in their own home town, I believe. Anyway, if you're up for a bit of pub rock, have a listen to Vdelli with "Something New".

  1. Moondance and Have I Told You Lately are two of my favourite songs Sue - they're on a mix compilation I made years ago and I still love them today - such beautiful songs to listen to.

    1. Glad you're enjoying the videos Sue, they were probably the most challenging part of these posts!!
