The A - Z of An Eclectic Music Collection: W......

..... is for Wendy Matthews & Whitney Houston
And we're winding up over the next few days, so now to W.

Firstly, Wendy Matthews, another Australian singer, although originally Canadian and she didn't come to Australia until her early 20s. Wendy has a lovely soulful voice and R&B style that sits well on my "cruisy jazz & blues" playlist. My favourite song is definitely this one, "The Day You Went Away".

What is there to say about Whitney Houston that hasn't already been said by people far more experienced and music-savvy than me? Her voice was truly amazing, and I'm thankful to have some of her music in my collection. As is so often the case for me, my favourites come from the movie in which they've been featured, "The Bodyguard" with Whitney starring alongside Kevin Costner. I couldn't pick between the two, so decided to add both - here's powerhouse Whitney singing "I Have Nothing" and the song that was originally penned and sung by Dolly Parton - "I Will Always Love You". But Whitney's will always be the version I prefer.

  1. I love them both - I actually want that Wendy Matthews song played at my funeral - it's in my funeral file (yes I started one because I like to be organized - my family will thank me one day and regret mocking me!) I also really liked The Bodyguard and I think I've seen it at least three times.

  2. Two great women singers. I think Wendy now lives in Northern NSW in a teepee and we lost a wonderful voice when Whitney died. Her songs always brought a tear to my eye. Thanks for sharing.
